ZF Race Camp Dominated by Electric Race Vehicles

Friedrichshafen welcomed approximately 500 Formula Student participants from all over the world. "The Future is Electric" – Grotendorst, Head of the E-Mobility Division, explains the motivation and attractiveness of electromobility

Friedrichshafen. Even though pure electric cars are still a rarity on Germany's roads, they already make up the majority at the ZF Race Camp. Approximately two-thirds of the 22 vehicles that teams supported by ZF have entered in this year's "Formula Student" design competition in Friedrichshafen will be powered by electric motors.

Electric drives have become more popular in Formula Student ever since the introduction of separate rankings for combustion engine-powered and electric motor-powered cars in 2010. This year, 16 of the 22 race cars which will be tested at the ZF Race Camp will be powered by electric motors. "It is extremely encouraging that the next generation of engineers is heavily involved with alternative drives", says ZF Board Member Human Resources, Jürgen Holeksa. "With our competence in the field of driveline and chassis technology, we are in a great position to provide the students with the best possible support in terms of conventional and electric drives. We are delighted that we have created an attractive offer for Formula Student participants who continue to appreciate the ZF Race Camp and enjoy coming to Friedrichshafen."

This year, we organize the ZF Race Camp for the ninth time and will host approximately 500 students in Friedrichshafen. This is a great opportunity for the 22 teams from universities across Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and, for the first time, from the Czech Republic, to prepare for the Formula Student Germany competition which will take place from August 9 to 14 at the Hockenheimring.

The ZF Race Camp also covered topics like the motivation and attractiveness of electromobility. "Future climate goals can only be reached with a significant level of electrification", explained Jörg Grotendorst, Head of the E-Mobility Division. He also stated that an electric drive not only exhibits a significantly higher level of efficiency than a combustion engine; it also provides more driving pleasure.

ZF has been strongly committed to Formula Student since 2002. Today, 38 university teams are sponsored. In addition to know-how, ZF supports the international young talents with high-tech racing products, financial help or team-building actions.
