Formula Bharat - A Look beyond the Horizon: Formula Student in India Part II

Cathy D'Souza brings a lot of experience in the field of Formula Student. As the current event manager of Formula Bharat, she is organizing the Formula Student competition in India. She gives us an impressive glimpse into her Formula Student life path, an interesting insight into the Indian competition and, as well, useful advice for participating FS students.

Cathy, can you name some of your biggest obstacles you had to face during your FS-time?

Oh, there have been so many, where do I begin?

I would like to start mentioning that everyone has obstacles to face and hence my journey is no more different. It's how we approach these obstacles and face them, which build one's character over time.

I shall highlight an obstacle from each major timeline in my FS journey:

1. UofT Racing - Being taken seriously
   

   Just like any fresher on a Formula Student team, the common sentiment shared was to be taken seriously by the senior members. Being green in the motorsports arena made the circumstances even more unfavourable. But I decided that in order to grow on the team, I just needed to 'show up' each and every time. Drive an hour away to pick up brake callipers? You got it. Skip class during the day to do a composite layup at a sponsor's site? You got it. Man a booth at a tradeshow for three days in a row, 10 hours a day? You got it. I think through this perseverance and effort, I had the opportunity to take up more responsibility each time and move into leadership positions within the team.

2. Formula North - Starting from scratch
   

   Starting a new project is never easy. And Formula North was no exception. There was just so much working against us. We were a young team of recent graduates with a larger-than-life vision. With no prior event organized by us in the past, we received sponsorship rejection emails throughout all of 2011. And it wasn't just the monetary aspect. No venue that we approached took us seriously. At the same time, we got on the wrong foot with Formula SAE in the very start, which made the circumstances even more difficult to begin.

   While the first event had a successful launch in 2012, what followed after the event's completion was one of the biggest hurdles I had to face in my lifetime. Having faced a slew of sponsor rejection emails for an entire season, being under constant threat of an event shutdown or failure and the stress of paying off all expenses through my personal finances, took a large toll on my mental health and personal well-being. The burnout was dreadful and I found it really hard to see success in anything. It took a lot time to re-ignite the passion with which I had started the Formula North series. If anything, this was one of the biggest hurdles I had to face during my time on Formula North.

3. Formula Bharat - New country, new culture
   
   A lot of people assume that because I have an 'Indian' background, that I would know everything about India. Quite frankly, I had never lived in India prior to 2014, except for my birth in Mumbai. Hence everything was new for me - the festivals, the culture of working with vendors, the deep-rooted 'patriarchy' that also existed in business culture and the multitude of languages across the country. Each state in India is so unique in all these aspects.Where I got lucky was in terms of my organizing team. Before Formula Bharat, there was an alumni-backed event called Formula Student India that ran in 2015 and 2016. Due to certain issues, the alumni felt the need to restart and I was bought on board to lead the effort. Hence I joined a fairly experienced team. One of my biggest hurdles was being recognized as the main decision maker in my company amongst many vendors. In many parts of India, it is not typical for a woman to being seen as the head-in-charge of an organization. Often when I met male vendors, they would make eye contact throughout the entire conversation with my male colleagues, assuming that they were the leads. Many times, even when my male colleagues did refer to me as the one in-charge, it would be ignored. This is a bias I had to subtly try to address or choose to ignore on many occasions.

Was waren die größten Herausforderungen, denen du während deiner FS-Zeit begegnet bist?

Oh, da gab es so viele, wo soll ich nur anfangen?

Ich möchte zunächst erwähnen, dass sicherlich jeder in seiner Zeit bei der Formula Student mit Herausforderungen konfrontiert wird, und so ist auch bei mir gewesen. Es ist die Art und Weise, wie wir an jene herangehen, uns ihnen stellen und damit unseren eigenen Charakter langfristig formen.

Ich werde je eine Herausforderung aus einer wichtigen Zeitlinie meiner FS-Reise hervorheben.

1. UofT Racing - Ernst genommen zu werden
   
   Wie jeder Neuling in einem Formula Student Team bestand zunächst das Bestreben, von den älteren Mitgliedern ernst genommen zu werden. Als Neuling in der Motorsport-Welt waren die Umstände noch herausfordernder. Aber ich beschloss, dass ich, um im Team zu wachsen, einfach bei jeder Gelegenheit 'präsent' sein musste. Eine Stunde wegfahren, um Bremssättel abzuholen? Kein Problem. Tagsüber den Unterricht schwänzen, um bei einem Sponsor ein Composite-Layup zu machen? Kein Problem. Drei Tage hintereinander einen Stand auf einer Messe betreuen, 10 Stunden am Tag? Ihr habt es verstanden. Ich denke, durch diese stetige Bereitschaft und meinen Ehrgeiz hatte ich die Möglichkeit, jedes Mal mehr Verantwortung zu übernehmen und in Führungspositionen innerhalb des Teams aufzusteigen.
   
   
2. Formula Nord - Bei Null anfangen
   
   Ein neues Projekt zu beginnen ist nie einfach. Und die Formula Nord war da keine Ausnahme. Es gab einfach so viel, was gegen uns arbeitete. Wir waren ein junges Team von Hochschulabsolventen mit einer riesigen Vision. Da wir in der Vergangenheit noch keine Veranstaltung organisiert hatten, erhielten wir das ganze Jahr 2011 hindurch E-Mails mit Ablehnungen von Sponsoren. Und es ging nicht nur um den finanziellen Aspekt. Kein Veranstaltungsort, an den wir heran traten, nahm uns ernst. Gleichzeitig hatten wir direkt zu Beginn mit der Formula SAE einen schwierigen Start, was die Ausgangslage noch komplizierter machte. Während das erste Event 2012 erfolgreich startete, war das, was danach folgte, eine der größten Hürden, die ich in meinem Leben bewältigen musste. Eine ganze Saison lang mit einer Flut von Sponsoren-Absagen konfrontiert und in ständiger Sorge zu sein, dass die Veranstaltung abgesagt wird oder scheitert, sowie der Stress, alle Ausgaben durch meine persönlichen Finanzen zu begleichen, forderte einen großen Tribut meiner mentalen Gesundheit und meinem persönlichen Wohlbefinden. Es war furchtbar und es fiel mir sehr schwer, in irgendetwas Erfolg zu sehen. Es brauchte viel Zeit, um die Leidenschaft wieder zu entfachen, mit der ich die Formula-Nord-Serie begonnen hatte. Definitiv war dies eine der größten Hürden, die ich während meiner Zeit bei der Formula Nord zu überwinden hatte.
   
   
3. Formula Bharat - Neues Land, neue Kultur
   
   Viele Leute gehen davon aus, dass ich, weil ich einen "indischen" Hintergrund habe, alles über Indien wissen würde. Um ehrlich zu sein, hatte ich vor 2014 noch nie in Indien gelebt, abgesehen von meiner Geburt in Mumbai. Daher war alles neu für mich - die Feste, die Kultur, die Zusammenarbeit mit Verkäufern, das tief verwurzelte "Patriarchat", das auch in der Geschäftskultur existiert, und die Vielzahl der Sprachen im Land. Jeder Bundesstaat in Indien ist in all diesen Aspekten so einzigartig. In Bezug auf die organisatorische Struktur des Teams hatte ich Glück. Vor der Formula Bharat gab es eine von Alumni unterstützte Veranstaltung namens Formula Student India, die 2015 und 2016 stattfand. Aufgrund bestimmter Probleme hatten die Alumni das Bedürfnis, nochmal ganz neu anzufangen, und ich wurde ins Boot geholt, um die Bemühungen zu leiten. So wurde ich Teil eines ziemlich erfahrenen Teams. Eine meiner größten Herausforderungen war es, als Hauptentscheidungsträgerin in meinem Unternehmen unter vielen Managern anerkannt zu werden. In vielen Teilen Indiens ist es nicht typisch für eine Frau, als Chefin einer Organisation gesehen zu werden. Wenn ich mich mit männlichen Verkäufern traf, nahmen sie oft während des gesamten Gesprächs nur Blickkontakt mit meinen männlichen Kollegen auf und gingen davon aus, dass sie die Hauptverantwortlichen waren. Selbst wenn meine männlichen Kollegen mich als diejenige bezeichneten, die die Leitung innehatte, wurde das oft ignoriert. Dies ist ein Vorurteil, das ich bei vielen Gelegenheiten subtil ansprechen oder einfach ignorieren musste.

Some key facts Cathy learned while building FS competitions:

• If your booked track doesn't have an area for skidpad, then you can't host a proper FS event by the rules.
• A good FS competition is often powered by the passion of its FS alumni base. Hence, keep involving FS alumni throughout the event's operations.
• A successful FS event is determined by the strength and commitment of its volunteer base. Without committed volunteers, there is just no event.
• Treat your volunteer team with respect. Not everyone can give you 100% of their time. Be realistic with their level of commitment and appreciate whatever time they can offer.
• In event management, things go wrong all the time. It is how to handle the situation that sets the competition apart from the rest.
• People are the same everywhere. After spending 12 years in FS on three separate continents, this has been a great learning.
• Always have a Plan B for everything, and a Plan C just in case. As I already said, in event management, anything can go wrong.

Dinge, die Cathy beim Aufbau von FS-Wettbewerben gelernt hat:

• Wenn die von euch gebuchte Strecke keinen Bereich für das Skidpad hat, dann könnt ihr keine richtige FS-Veranstaltung entsprechend der Regeln ausrichten.
• Ein guter FS-Wettbewerb wird oft von der Leidenschaft seiner FS-Alumni-Basis angetrieben. Daher ist meine Empfehlung, immer wieder FS-Alumni in den Ablauf der Veranstaltung einzubeziehen.
• Eine erfolgreiche FS-Veranstaltung wird durch die Stärke und das Engagement ihrer Freiwilligen bestimmt. Ohne engagierte Freiwillige gibt es einfach keine Veranstaltung. Behandelt euer Team mit Respekt. Nicht jeder kann 100 % seiner Zeit zur Verfügung stellen. Seid realistisch mit dem Grad des Engagements und schätzt die Zeit, die die Personen anbieten können, wert.
• Im Veranstaltungsmanagement gehen immer wieder Dinge schief. Es ist die Art und Weise, wie man mit der Situation umgeht, die den Unterschied zu anderen Veranstaltungen ausmacht.
• Die Menschen sind überall gleich. Nachdem ich 12 Jahre in der FS auf drei verschiedenen Kontinenten verbracht habe, war dies eine großartige Lektion.
• Habe immer einen Plan B für alles und einen Plan C für den Fall der Fälle. Wie gesagt, im Eventmanagement kann alles schief gehen.

What kind of impact had the pandemic on Formula Bharat and how did the competition in January look like under these circumstances?

Every competition in the world was affected by the pandemic, however, Formula Bharat was lucky to have a longer time period to make decisions. In August 2020, we made the decision to move virtual and now after looking back on the virtual events in January, it has been a good run so far. Engaging teams while they are away from their shop and their team mates was one of the core considerations with the virtual concept. We hope to return back to track in January 2022. While that still remains our goal, events as large as Formula Student will be determined by re-opening of colleges around the country (latest by July) and further government protocols issued in the fall season of 2021.

Welchen Einfluss hatte die Covid-19-Pandemie auf die Formula Bharat und wie sah der Wettbewerb im Januar unter diesen Umständen aus?

Jeder Wettbewerb auf der Welt war von der Pandemie betroffen, aber die Formula Bharat hatte das Glück, eine längere Vorlaufzeit zu haben, um den Wettbewerb neu auszurichten. Im August 2020 trafen wir die Entscheidung, auf virtuelle Veranstaltungen umzusteigen - und jetzt, wo ich die auf unsere virtuellen Veranstaltungen zurückblicke, kann ich sagen, dass es ein gute Alternative war. Die Teams einzubinden, während sie nicht in ihrer Werkstatt und bei ihren Teamkollegen sind, war eine der Kerngedanken bei unserem virtuellen Konzept. Wir hoffen, dass wir im Januar 2022 wieder in die bekannte Spur zurückkehren können. Auch wenn dies unser größtes Ziel ist, ist uns nichtsdestotrotz bewusst, dass so große Events wie die Formula Student von der Wiedereröffnung der Universitäten im ganzen Land und von weiteren Regierungsentscheidungen in der Herbstsaison 2021 abhängig sein werden.
