Audi Best Lightweight Concept Award

Category: Competition, 2012, FSG Award

There are no compromises when it comes to the finest sports car engineering. Technical precision and performance must be pushed to the limits – and beyond. Audi pioneered the use of aluminum in manufacturing car bodies. With fuel prices constantly rising, the topic of weight reduction is more important than ever. Therefore, AUDI AG is sponsoring the Audi Award for the best lightweight concept at the Formula Student Germany 2012.

The criteria for the award are:

  • Application of lightweight design in the development phase:
    • Intelligent structural concepts and reduction of parts through integration of functions for all assemblies.
    • Use of simulation tools to reduce weight by intelligent part- and structure-design.
    • Choice of materials and using right material, where material characteristics, functions and costs are balanced best.

  • Entries will be judged on the basis of
    • Overall weight
    • Power-to-weight-ratio
    • Position of the centre of gravity

All design reports for Formula Student Combustion and Formula Student Electric are automatically evaluated based on these criteria. The best teams then have to explain their lightweight concept to the jury. The team with the best concept will be awarded 1.500 €.
